In South India, food is traditionally served on half a banana leaf. Alternatively, in a steel thali, a round plate where the different parts of the meal (typically rice, dhal - a pulse stew - vegetables, a chutney and a sweet) are put one beside the other, to mix and match as the fancy strikes.

The house to which I am inviting you is 200
years
old and was bought by my great grandfather
some
ninety years ago. Since then, five
generations
have crossed its doorsteps. Few
changes have
been carried out in the structure in
its history
of two centuries.
It has the
sloping roof and
open space in its middle (for
letting in fresh
air, sunlight and to drain
rainwater) that
characterize Kerala architecture.
  The ground
floor-sitting area and kitchen-has
an area of
3,550 sq.ft. plus a spacious upstairs
for bedrooms
and WC. It is made in the
traditional way, with
brick, mortar and wood,
making it always
pleasantly cool inside,
pulsating with the sweet
memories of
generations.
There is a 3/4 acre
backyard with a
spacious bathroom/washroom and a
big well, enough
to fulfill all domestic needs as
well as watering
the garden and the vegetation
around. Nowadays
you dont have to draw
your own water in order to
wash and there is
running water in the kitchen
and bathroom. These
are the main innovations
made, to make life
easier, but taking particular
care to respect the
look and the feel of the
house,
without altering its personality.

My name is Dilip Kumar - here you can see me with my wife Uma, breaking a coconut from a tree in our yard. I was born and raised in
Elapully, in the South Indian state of Kerala, from a very old family of educated and open-minded people. I have a degree in English literature, have traveled in
European countries and have some very good long-standing European friends. The values my father and mother taught me make me shun
the superstitions, prejudices and

discriminations (be it race, sex,
religion, caste, nationality, social status or whatever) that unfortunately are still a part of
Indian culture. Nevertheless, my deep
love for my own country and especially the place
where I was born, has prompted me, over the years, not only to extensively explore and study the surroundings of my home village but also to
carefully study its traditions, seeing for
myself
that the best of them is a precious
knowledge
database which deserves to be preserved
from the
onslaught of modernity. Not only for
the sake of cultural and landscape diversity, not only for the
sake of environment, but for their
own sake! After years of living abroad as an English teacher in a high school in the Maldives, my wish is to spend the
rest of my years in my home village, doing something that would enable me to
share my love for the place and help preserve its beauty and cultural integrity, while promoting international
cultural and hospitality exchange.
